The Federal Government to extend the benefits of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to private universities, so that they would enjoy the same facilities as their public counterparts.
The Vice-Chancellor of Lead City University, Ibadan, Prof. Kabiru Adeyemo, made the appeal during a press briefing on Monday in Ibadan, Oyo State to mark the institution’s 20th anniversary.
Adeyemo emphasised that private university students should be granted access to student loans, while lecturers should receive government-backed research grants.
“My advice is that the Federal Government should encourage private universities by allowing them to enjoy the facilities that most public universities benefit from, especially in terms of TETFund.
“As the chairman of the Committee of Private Universities in Nigeria, we have made our position clear that private universities should also have access to these facilities,” he stated.
Adeyemo further stressed the need for educational equity, insisting that TETFund resources, sourced from taxpayers’ money, should not be exclusive to public institutions.
“Our students should be allowed to access scholarships, which will help them offset some of their school fees.
“Apart from that, lecturers in private universities should also benefit from these facilities, so they have a sense of belonging.
“At least, TETFund money is taxpayers’ money and should not only be enjoyed by public universities alone,” he said.
The VC urged the government to create a conducive environment for private universities to thrive, calling on the National Universities Commission (NUC), the Federal Government, and other stakeholders to provide necessary incentives.
Reflecting on Lead City University’s achievements over the past two decades, Adeyemo attributed its success to strong teamwork, academic excellence, and a commitment to producing wealth creators rather than job seekers.
“Our commitment to excellence is second to none. The staff are loyal to the system. Our teamwork, relationship, commitment, and unity of purpose set us apart.
“We operate an open-door policy, have zero tolerance for misconduct, and are student-friendly,” he said.
Adeyemo noted that the university’s programs have grown from 40 to about 120, pledging to maintain academic standards in line with NUC regulations.
“The university’s expansion is driven by a vision to create a dynamic, inclusive, and innovative academic environment that empowers both students and staff for excellence.
“Our primary goal is to enhance capacity, efficiency, and motivation within our workforce, ensuring they remain at the forefront of academic excellence, innovation, and service delivery,” he added.
