Leaders from 27 African countries have endorsed a World Bank-led, multi-billion-dollar initiative to expand electricity access, advancing SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy).
The program, Mission 300 combines funding from the World Bank, African Development Bank, and private investors, targeting sub-Saharan Africa. Governments will implement reforms to attract private capital, while partnerships with groups like the Rockefeller Foundation could mobilize up to $85 billion.
World Bank President Ajay Banga noted the challenge in estimating total funding but emphasized its transformative potential. By improving energy access, the initiative also supports SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), enabling education, healthcare, and business opportunities.
This collaboration underscores Africa’s commitment to sustainable development, leveraging public-private partnerships to close energy gaps and drive inclusive progress.
