In alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals SDGs, particularly *SDG 1 No Poverty*, *SDG 2 Zero Hunger*, and *SDG 13 Climate Action**, the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) has disbursed ₦304 million to 5,000 flood-affected households in Jigawa State. The initiative, launched in Auyo LGA, targets vulnerable groups—including widows, persons with disabilities, and displaced families—to rebuild livelihoods disrupted by climate-driven disasters.
NRCS President Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga emphasized the program’s dual focus: 3,000 households received agricultural grants (₦50,000 each) to revive food production *SDG 2*, while 2,000 families obtained cash assistance (₦77,000 each) for immediate needs, advancing poverty reduction *SDG 1*. This anticipatory intervention, spanning flood-prone LGAs like Kirikasamma and Malam-Madori, underscores proactive climate resilience efforts *SDG 13*.
The effort forms part of a broader 2024 Flood Emergency Appeal, validated across 13 states, with phase one prioritizing Jigawa. By 2025, 11,500 beneficiaries nationwide—including in Akwa-Ibom, Kebbi, and Zamfara—will receive Cash and Voucher Assistance, reflecting *SDG 17 Partnerships* through collaboration with agencies like NEMA.
NEMA’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, highlighted the government’s commitment to complementing humanitarian aid, while Governor Umar Namadi praised the initiative’s role in restoring livelihoods. Local officials, including Auyo Council Chairman Bilya Ahmed, noted the transformative impact on communities grappling with recurrent floods.
Beneficiaries like Hajiya Duniya Manu pledged prudent use of funds, illustrating how localized aid fosters sustainable recovery. By integrating climate adaptation, poverty alleviation, and multisector partnerships, the NRCS initiative exemplifies a holistic approach to achieving the SDGs in disaster-prone regions.
