Beijing hosted the world’s first half-marathon where humanoid robots raced alongside humans. While organizers framed the event as a display of technological progress, the robots—unsurprisingly—lost.

The fastest robot, Tiangong Ultra, finished in 2 hours and 40 minutes, over an hour behind the top human runner’s time of 1:11:07. Despite the gap, the robot still celebrated by breaking through a finisher’s banner.

The race featured 21 bipedal robots competing with 10,000 human participants. The machines, built by Chinese firms like DroidVP and Noetix Robotics, varied in design—some stood under 1.2 meters, while others reached 1.8 meters. One company highlighted its robot’s human-like appearance, complete with facial expressions, though it’s unclear how that aided performance.

Engineers assisted the robots at aid stations, swapping batteries instead of handing out water. Organizers clarified that the event was a technical showcase, not a true competition, with no expectation of a robot victory.
The marathon aligns with China’s push to lead in AI and robotics, as it vies with the U.S. for tech dominance. However, experts like Alan Fern (Oregon State University) note that while such demonstrations highlight agility, they don’t prove practical utility or intelligence.

Some analysts question whether robot marathons truly reflect industrial potential, but China sees investments in cutting-edge fields as key to driving economic growth. For now, humans remain the faster runners—but the race for robotic advancement continues.
