Ugandan researchers have made a groundbreaking discovery that aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). Scientists at Makerere University’s Lung Institute have developed a more accessible and cost-effective pneumonia treatment for children, potentially saving millions of young lives across Africa.

The PediCap study, conducted in five African countries, demonstrated that switching from injectable antibiotics to oral medication (like amoxicillin) is equally effective, reducing hospital stays and easing pressure on healthcare systems. This innovation supports SDG 3’s aim to reduce child mortality and SDG 10’s goal of improving healthcare access in low-income regions.

Pneumonia remains the leading infectious killer of children under five, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. By simplifying treatment, this research—funded by the European Union and the Penta Foundation—addresses critical gaps in healthcare equity, ensuring vulnerable populations benefit from affordable, life-saving solutions.
