The Free2Green Rivers initiative is launching a massive 2.3 Million Eco-Volunteers program across Rivers State, marking a major step in climate action, youth empowerment, and the pursuit of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through grassroots efforts. Central to the initiative is a bold vision: equipping 230,000 women and youths across all 23 LGAs in Rivers State with climate-smart solutions, community-based projects, and green economy opportunities. Now, with over 2.3 million eco-volunteers onboard, it has become Nigeria’s largest sub-national sustainability movement—integrating environmental action, youth employment, cultural revival, and healthcare equity.
Sen. Ireti Heebah Kingibe, Deputy Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, praised the initiative, stating: *“This is policy in action. With 2.3 million eco-volunteers, the program aligns with Nigeria’s climate resilience and inclusive governance goals. It proves how local youth efforts can drive national SDG progress.”* Pat Obiene, State Coordinator of *Free2Green Rivers*, emphasized that the initiative goes beyond a typical program—it’s a movement. *“These youths are reshaping Rivers State’s future, showing that local actions have global impact. The SDGs are now real—sparking jobs, peace, and hope, with young people leading the green and blue economy revolution.”*
Victor Wilkinson Agih, Global Director of *ECO2RUPPERS Africa Initiative*, commended the project, noting: *“This isn’t just investing in ideas, but in people—people who can restore ecosystems, innovate livelihoods, and build equitable climate solutions from the ground up.”* Through *Free2Green Rivers*, youth are proving to be the driving force for sustainable change.
