The House of Representatives has approved the ₦140 billion budget for the South East Development Commission (SEDC) after its defence before the House Committee in Abuja. SEDC Managing Director Mark Okoye presented strategic plans focused on socio‑economic growth across Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states.
Lawmakers welcomed the proposal, stressing that funds must target infrastructure, industrialisation, agriculture, technology and investment promotion to boost economic opportunities. Committee Chairman Hon. Chris Nkwonta praised Okoye’s comprehensive vision and leadership, urging sustained momentum to deliver visible benefits.
The approval follows Senate scrutiny, where some lawmakers raised concerns over recurrent expenditure priorities. Senator Tony Nwoye urged greater focus on critical infrastructure like roads, hospitals and erosion control.
Established under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the SEDC is mandated to drive sustainable development, attract investment and reduce regional disparities. It will coordinate with stakeholders to implement transformative projects, positioning the South‑East as a competitive economic zone.
