The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike, has called on athletes representing Abuja at the 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun State to strive for victory, emphasizing excellence and unity in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Receiving the Unity Torch ahead of the event (May 16–30 in Abeokuta), Wike—represented by Chief of Staff Chidi Amadi—charged the team to secure medals, highlighting sports as a driver of SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). “This festival fosters unity and healthy competition. Go with determination and make us proud,” he urged, aligning the push for success with SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
The torch ceremony, attended by the National Sports Commission (NSC) and FCT Youth and Sports Secretary Comrade Ango Abdullahi, celebrated Nigeria’s cultural diversity (SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities) through vibrant performances by the FCT Troupe. Wike’s rallying cry reinforced sports’ role in advancing sustainable development and national pride.
