U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, clarified that the updated visa policy for Nigerians is not discriminatory but seeks to address security gaps and immigration concerns. During a meeting with Nigeria’s Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, Mills explained that the new rules—reducing most non-immigrant visas to single-entry, three-month validity—align with U.S. immigration priorities and reciprocal agreements
The changes follow stricter U.S. visa screening and tracking measures to prevent overstays, which can result in deportation or bans. Mills emphasized that visa compliance is critical, as violations—including criminal activity or student visa breaches—may lead to revocation. Minister Idris welcomed the clarification, urging Nigerians to respect immigration laws to maintain positive international relations. Both officials agreed that open dialogue ensures smoother travel for business, tourism, and cultural exchange.
