Liverpool’s new signing Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring on his debut, assisted by Florian Wirtz, but Jean-Philippe Mateta equalized from the spot after Virgil van Dijk fouled Ismaila Sarr. Jeremie Frimpong’s deflected cross restored Liverpool’s lead, only for Sarr to level again in the second half following a superb Adam Wharton pass.
In the shootout, Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson starred, saving from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott, while Mohamed Salah blazed over. Alisson denied Eberechi Eze, and Borna Sosa hit the bar, but Palace held their nerve to secure a famous victory.
