Venezuelan democracy activist María Corina Machado has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless work promoting democratic rights and her struggle to achieve a peaceful transition from dictatorship. When asked about a public campaign by US President Donald Trump for the prize, the committee chairman stated that while such campaigns occur, the decision is based solely on Alfred Nobel’s will. The committee emphasized that democracy is a precondition for lasting peace and praised Machado for showing that democratic tools are also tools for peace, embodying hope for a future where citizens’ rights are protected.
