A military court in the Democratic Republic of Congo has sentenced former President Joseph Kabila to death in absentia. The conviction, delivered on Tuesday, found him guilty of high treason, war crimes, crimes against humanity, murder, sexual assault, torture, and insurrection.
Kabila, who held power for nearly two decades, was ultimately forced out of office following deadly protests. The trial proceeded without him, as he has primarily resided in South Africa since late 2023. However, his presence in rebel-held Goma in eastern Congo was noted as recently as May of this year.The ruling by the military tribunal in the capital marks a severe legal judgment against the former leader for the grave charges brought against him.
