Nigeria’s Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, faces a formal petition challenging the validity of his legal credentials. Former NBA First Vice President, John Aikpokpo-Martins, has petitioned the Legal Practitioners’ Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) to investigate Kalu’s enrolment as a legal practitioner.
The petition alleges that Kalu simultaneously participated in the NYSC scheme from March 9, 2010, to March 8, 2011, while attending the Nigerian Law School from April 23, 2010, to July 1, 2011. This overlap, the petitioner argues, violates provisions of both the Legal Practitioners Act and the NYSC Act, rendering his admission to the Nigerian Bar potentially fraudulent. The LPDC has been urged to probe the authenticity of his enrolment on the Supreme Court’s Roll.
