At least 23 people have died in severe flooding that swept through Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, following a night of torrential rain, police confirmed.
Rescue operations are underway, with authorities reporting that approximately 30 people have been saved. However, many drowned after being swept into rivers, while others were electrocuted. The military has been deployed to assist those trapped in vehicles amidst widespread property damage and road closures.
Key roads, including Mombasa Road and Uhuru Highway, were submerged, disrupting travel and forcing several flights destined for Nairobi to divert to Mombasa.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid flooded streets as emergency teams continue search-and-rescue missions. The Kenya Meteorological Department warns that the heavy rainfall is expected to persist, raising river levels and the risk of further urban flooding through at least March 9th.
