Cholera Outbreak Undermines SDG 3 as NCDC Reports 886 Cases

Nigeria is facing a growing cholera crisis, with 886 suspected cases and 14 deaths reported between January 27 and February 2, 2025, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC). The outbreak, affecting 22 states, highlights challenges in achieving *Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3*—ensuring healthy lives and well-being for all.

Alarmingly, cases have surged by *75%*, while deaths rose by *250%* compared to the same period in 2024. *Bayelsa State* bears the highest burden, accounting for *78% (695 cases)*, with Southern Ijaw LGA as the epicenter. Other high-risk states include *Rivers (54 cases), Niger (33), and Abia (32)*.

In the fifth epidemiological week, *100 new cases* emerged across seven states—Bayelsa, Rivers, Enugu, Abia, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, and Delta—though no new deaths were recorded. The NCDC warns that *children under five* are most vulnerable, followed by those aged *5–14*, underscoring gaps in *SDG 3’s* targets for child health and disease prevention.

The outbreak reflects systemic issues such as *poor sanitation (SDG 6)* and *inequitable healthcare access (SDG 10)*. The NCDC urges prompt medical care for symptoms like severe diarrhea and vomiting, but sustainable solutions—including *clean water infrastructure, hygiene education, and strengthened health systems*—are critical to aligning with SDG 3 and preventing future crises.
