The United National Transport Union (UNTU) is consulting its members at Transnet for a potential strike mandate after wage negotiations collapsed. The dispute remains unresolved following unsuccessful mediation by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).
UNTU is demanding a 10% wage increase for one year and job security guarantees, while Transnet has proposed a 17.5% raise over three years. Despite UNTU’s willingness to negotiate further under CCMA guidance, talks have stalled.
Union spokesperson Atenkosi Plaatjie stated that UNTU suggested a longer-term wage agreement to ensure stability, but Transnet dismissed the proposal. “Management appears unconcerned about the economic consequences of a strike,” Plaatjie said.
No strike date has been set, but UNTU continues assessing worker support for industrial action.
