Universities South Africa’s Board of Directors has voiced serious concern following violent student protests at Walter Sisulu University’s Mthatha campus, where a fatal shooting occurred.
Board Chairperson Professor Francis Peterson called the incident “deeply unfortunate,” urging calm and constructive dialogue between students and management. He acknowledged that the protests arose from grievances over living conditions and praised the university council for initiating an inquiry.
Peterson encouraged students to pursue peaceful resolutions, stating, “While awaiting the inquiry’s findings, we urge students to engage through proper channels. Peaceful discussions ensure concerns are addressed safely.”
The tragedy has reignited calls for universities to enhance student engagement and improve communication, particularly on welfare and safety issues. The board emphasized the need for collaborative solutions to prevent further unrest.
