Global Stocks Decline After Trump Expands Tariffs

Stocks fell globally after President Trump announced plans to impose higher tariffs on goods from over 90 countries. In the U.S., the Dow Jones and S&P 500 dropped about 1%, while the Nasdaq fell 1.5%. The decline mirrored losses in Asian and European markets as investors reacted to the trade tensions.

Adding to concerns, new data revealed that U.S. job growth in May, June, and July slowed more sharply than initially estimated, raising economic worries. However, the market impact remains milder compared to April’s tariff-related turmoil. Despite the downturn, U.S. markets had recently reached record highs, suggesting underlying resilience. The situation remains fluid as investors assess the long-term effects of trade policies and economic signals.

In Africa, where malnutrition and infant mortality remain pressing challenges, breastfeeding is a powerful, cost-effective solution. The World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and local partners are working to ensure African mothers receive the support they need—*accurate information, skilled lactation assistance, and breastfeeding-friendly environments*—whether at home, work, or healthcare facilities. Breastfeeding is not just a personal choice; it’s a societal imperative. In Africa, scaling up breastfeeding could: 🔹 *Save lives*—Exclusive breastfeeding reduces infant deaths from diarrhea and pneumonia, major killers in the region. 🔹 *Boost cognitive development*—Breastfed children perform better in school, fueling future economic growth. 🔹 *Cut healthcare costs*—Fewer childhood illnesses mean less strain on underfunded health systems. 🔹 *Empower women*—Supportive workplaces and policies enable mothers to balance work and breastfeeding. Communities, employers, and governments must collaborate to break barriers like cultural stigma and lack of maternity protections. By promoting breastfeeding-friendly policies, workplace creches, and public awareness, we can ensure every African child gets the best start in life. *This World Breastfeeding Week, let’s unite to champion breastfeeding—for healthier babies, stronger mothers, and a thriving Africa.* Celebrating World Breastfeeding Week in Africa: A Call to Action
