The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has severed all relations with the Church in Wales following the appointment of Bishop Cherry Vann, an openly lesbian cleric, as Archbishop of Wales. The decision was announced by Primate Henry Ndukuba during the opening of the 14th Church of Nigeria Conference of Chancellors, Registrars, and Legal Officers in Abuja.
Describing the appointment as “an abomination” and a departure from biblical teachings, Ndukuba condemned the Church in Wales’ decision, likening it to the 2003 consecration of Gene Robinson in the U.S., which also led to a split. “We reject Bishop Vann’s election and cut all ties with the Church in Wales,” he stated. The Primate criticized Western churches for promoting revisionist theology, calling it contrary to God’s will. Despite the break, the Church of Nigeria pledged support for orthodox Anglicans in Wales through networks like GAFCON.
Ndukuba also outlined plans for global mission expansion, including work in Europe, and disclosed a $2.5 million donation to GAFCON’s endowment fund, with another $2.3 million planned for Nigerian Anglican missions.
Addressing legal officers, he urged vigilance in defending doctrinal integrity and supporting Church reforms, emphasizing their role as “watchmen” for the faith.
