A military helicopter crash in Ghana’s Ashanti region on Wednesday killed eight people, including Defense Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. The aircraft, carrying five passengers and three crew members, was traveling from Accra to Obuasi when it went down.
Ghana’s Armed Forces lost contact with the Z9 helicopter before the crash was confirmed. President’s Chief of Staff Julius Debrah called it a “national tragedy” and ordered flags flown at half-mast indefinitely. Other victims included acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, National Democratic Congress Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, and ex-parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye. The crew—Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Malin Twum-Ampadu, and Sgt. Ernest Addo Mensah—also perished.
