FIFA has announced that every match at the 2026 World Cup will include a mandatory three-minute “hydration break” around the 22nd minute of each half, effectively splitting games into quarters. This new rule is designed first and foremost as a player safety measure, ensuring consistent conditions for all teams regardless of weather.

Unlike traditional “cooling breaks,” which depend on heat and humidity, these pauses will occur in every match. The clock will continue running, with the time added as stoppage time. The breaks will also allow coaches to make tactical adjustments and broadcasters potential commercial opportunities.
The schedule for the 2026 tournament has been crafted to largely avoid extreme heat, with many matches in climate-controlled or evening slots. However, these uniform hydration breaks represent a permanent shift in the flow of World Cup matches.
